Social Responsibility

Social Responsibility (SR) is a concept whereby organizations consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on customers, employees, stakeholders, communities and the environment in all aspects of their operations. For HKIUS and HKURC, social responsibility implies how to make contribution to the society. HKIUS has been awarded with the Caring Organization status effective on 10th February, 2009. The Award reflects the policy of HKIUS that we will try to help the needed people.

Souvenir for Chest program

When organizing a seminar, HKIUS grasp the opportunities in finding ways to make donations. For instance, HKIUS has joint the souvenir for Chest program in which every time the amount equivalents to the purchasing of a souvenir for the speaker in the Technical seminars were donated jointly by the organizers to the Community Chest (公益金).

Fund Raising for Snow Storm in Mainland China

China’s snow storm in January is one of the biggest disasters in history. Not only hampered thousands people’s Lunar New Year plans, victims are also suffering from freezing cold weather, shortages of food, paralyzed transportation and being hit by blackouts due to missed coal deliveries for power stations and rising demand amid the cold. According to the figures from The Civil Affairs Ministry on 29th January, the snow stom have already caused 38 deaths, 150 thousand houses collapsed and more than millions people are being affected.

Under this circumstance, HKIUS and HKURC are willing to concert the efforts of its members by organizing a Fund Raising for Snow Storm in Mainland China at the mid of January. This campaign is firstly originated by Ir Dr. The Hon Raymond Ho Chung-tai, SBS, JP, Ir Prof. Louis Lock Fat Shing, Ir Dr. King Wong and HKIUS and HKURC are one of the supporting with Hong Kong Institution of Engineers- Environmental Division, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers- Safety Specialists Committee, Hong Kong Association of Risk Management and Safety, Association of Engineering Professional in Society Ltd and Society of Operations Engineers (Hong Kong Region).

Through urging the public to make donations via e-mail, fax etc. The funds, which are for rescue and rehabilitation in GuangXi, will be donated to Guangxi Red Cross. More importantly, this campaign has raised more than $76,000 and we truly hope that the homes and lives of victims can be restored as soon as possible.

Fund Raising for Sichuan Earthquake Victims

The 8 Magnitude quake which struck on 12 May in Sichuan had taken away lives of perhaps as many as 70,000 people, damaging houses and schools, cutting off supplies of water, electricity and food and paralyzing transport systems in many counties. As a member of our motherland, we have great sympathy for those affected families. A Hong Kong Engineering, Utility Specialists and Information Technology Industry Joint Fund Raising for Sichuan Wenchuan Earthquake Victims was organized to urge professionals, practitioners, students from different aspects to send their caring hands and make donations to the quake victims for rescue and rehabilitation.

The fund raising was firstly organized by Ir Dr. the Honourable Raymond Ho Chung-tai, SBS, JP, Ir Dr. Samson Tam Wai Ho, JP and HKIUS and HKURC were one of the supporting organizations with Hong Kong Association of Risk Management and Safety, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers- Safety Specialists Committee, Society of Operations Engineers (Hong Kong Region) and Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (Hong Kong).

Donation amount of $20,000 was received and had been sent to Education, Science & Technology Department, Liaison Office of the Central People Government in the Hong Kong S.A.R. immediately in the hope to help rebuild education facilities for the quake affected regions. Meanwhile, an amount of $150,000 was gathered by HKIUS and was donated to charity. We truly hope that such financial aid to the victims can help to resume their lives as quick as possible.
