Technical visit to Drainage Services Department’s drainage tunnel construction

A technical visit to Drainage Services Department’s drainage tunnel construction site organized by Hong Kong Institute of Utility Specialists was held on 13th November, 2010. A total of 27 people joint the visit in which 16 were students and staff from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The engineer of AECOM, the consultant of the project, first delivered a presentation introducing the background and approach of the project. The purpose of the project is to ease the flooding problem of the Sham Shui Po, Cheung Sha Wan and Lai Chi Kok area. Constructing a drainage tunnel is considered to be a better solution than upgrading the existing drainage system. The excavation works are carried out mainly by using the tunnel boring machine. He illustrated the operation and maintenance of the machine.
The engineers guided a tour to the site of the project. They first visited a 40m shaft where the workers enter the tunnel and work inside. The shaft was constructed by mechanical excavation and the drill and blast method. With the permission of the Engineer, they were able to see the opening of the tunnel where the tunnel boring machine enters. Last but not least, they visited part of the slurry treatment plant where the rocks and slurry from the tunnel boring process is being treated.
Technical Visit to China Light Power Training School

Venue: CLP Training School (Shek Mun, Shatin)
A technical visit to China Light Power Training School was held on 29th October 2010. A total of 23 people joint the visit in which 16 were students and staff from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The Principal of the training school, Mr. Bui Tai Wah, first delivered a presentation introducing the background, operation and facilities of the school. The training school was established in the 1960s and the objective of the school is to train students to become an Engineer specialize in the electricity supply system. The training school reproduces the actual working environment for trainees to practice the operation.
The Engineers then guided a tour to introduce the technical operation of the CLP. They visited the Operations Training Centre, Cable Jointing Workshop, Electrical Fitting Workshop and Overhead Line Training Centre. The Engineers explained the operation, monitoring and maintenance of the electricity supply system. During the tour, participants could have a close look to different parts of the system. Some of them raised questions and discussed with the Engineers. Through the presentation of the Engineers and discussions, they could have a deeper understanding about how the system operates. Some of the participants were given chance to try out some operations.
Technical Visit to Shanghai - Towards Sustainable Urban Development
Date: 9th – 12th September, 2010
Venue: Shanghai, China
The technical visit to Shanghai for the Second International Conference on Utility Management and Safety was held by Hong Kong Institute of Utility Specialists and Hong Kong Utility Research Centre from 9th September 2010 to 12th September 2010. The objectives of this technical visit were to provide a platform for the utility specialists from local and Mainland China to exchange their latest development of utility management and technology and to enhance the communication between them and HKIUS. The visit was led by the Honorary Secretary of HKIUS, Mr. Terry Mountain and the Chief Executive of Construction Professionals’ Development Centre, Ir Dr. King Wong.
This event was very successful and our participants of delegation were satisfied with the destination of this visit, we also appreciated for all related parties who gave support and assistance.
Seminar on Opportunities for Macau in 21 Century - Sustainable Development of Utility Survey

In the past few years, the economy development and underground utility network and information infrastructure of Hong Kong and Macau were growing very fast, much greater importance was attached to the management of underground utility, related legislation was also started.
For improving the sustainable development of in utility survey and strengthening the technical skills and management between Hong Kong and Macau, Construction Professionals’ Development Center held a seminar on “Opportunities for Macau in 21 Century – Sustainable Development of Utility Survey” at the Hall of Macao Chamber of Commerce. The seminar attracted 50 participants who were interested in utility surveying.
Overall, the cooperation and the information sharing of the utility survey between Hong Kong and Macau had been stepped up after this seminar, we believed that we would have more exchanges in the future and we could build a better tomorrow for the utility industry.
