HKIUS

Continuing Professional Development

The HKIUS CPD Definition

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the systematic maintenance, enhancement, and expansion of professional knowledge, skills, and attributes required to effectively fulfill engineering duties throughout a career. Its primary objective is to elevate individual capability, thereby driving organizational excellence and performance.

General Scope and Format of CPD

CPD encompasses matters of direct technical relevance as well as broader studies crucial to HKIUS members’ career advancement. These include professional ethics, communication, environmental sustainability, financial management, leadership skills, legal frameworks, marketing, and occupational safety and health.

Approved CPD activities include, but are not limited to, participating in or organizing courses, lectures, seminars, symposia, conferences, presentations, workshops, industrial attachments, site visits, e-learning, and other professional activities. These may be provided by HKIUS, the broader engineering profession, or external organizations. HKIUS recognizes CPD training conducted by any of its Registered or Recognized Training Organizations (RTOs)—including the CIC, recognized universities (such as PolyU and SPEED), IVE, UTI, or Build.IT—as well as local institutes registered with statutory authorities and recognized professional institutions (such as the HKIE).

Additionally, relevant modules within postgraduate degree programs may contribute toward a trainee’s professional development, provided they align with the HKIUS CPD criteria.
